Living on campus is an exciting part of our campus community, whether you are a First-Time Freshman, Transfer or Graduate Student. University Student Housing at Mississippi State has a variety of housing options that are sure to accommodate your needs.
Housing Application Steps
Step 1: Be Admitted
Only students admitted to the university can apply for University Student Housing.
Step 2: MSU NetID and Password
Use your MSU NetID that can be found in your admissions portal to log in to your MyState account.
Step 3: Housing Application
For prospective freshmen, the housing application priority period runs from October 1st through April 1st. Housing Applications must be submitted by 11:59pm CST on April 1 to participate in the first round of Online Room Selection.
Your housing priority is primarily based on when you applied to the University (through Admissions). Housing priority may be affected by a variety of other factors including, but not limited to, roommate requests (and their date of application for admission to the university), participation in living-learning or theme communities, and other criteria.
The Fall/Spring housing application will continue to be available to admitted students into the Fall semester. Select the Fall / Spring application and complete each section. Click 'Submit My Application' on the final step of the application process.
*There is a $100 non-refundable processing fee to apply for housing.
Step 4: Orientation Sign-Up
Registration for new students entering Fall 2026 will go live on February 1, 2027 at 9 a.m. CT. Students must be registered for Orientation by May 1st in order to participate in Online Room Selection (OLRS) in May.
Step 5: Housing Contract
In order for prospective freshmen students to maintain their established housing priority status, students must return to their Housing Portal between April 2 through April 30 to complete their Housing Contract. If the student is under the age of 18 during this period, a parent or guardian must complete a proxy agreement before the student is permitted to sign their contract. Students who fail to complete their contract by the April 30th priority deadline will participate in Round 2 of Online Room Selection.
Step 6: Roommates
Roommate Search and Selection for prospective freshmen takes place December 1st through May 1st on the student Housing Portal. Students have several options to select a roommate. We also encourage students to utilize the ZeeMee app to search for potential roommates. You must be mutually confirmed on the Housing Portal by May 1st to select a room together during Online Room Selection. Requests for roommate pairing after May 1st will not be honored regardless of circumstance.
Step 7: Online Room Selection
Online Room Selection (OLRS) is an online self-assignment room selection process for First-Time Freshmen.
To participate in OLRS and secure their bed space, incoming freshmen students will first be required register for Orientation between February 1st through May 1st, and sign their online MSU Housing contract between April 2nd through April 30th. Housing Contracts are not tied to a specific assignment and are transferable to any bed space in university student housing. A freshman student’s timeslot - a specific date/time to begin searching for/selecting housing assignments - will be issued in mid-May according to a student's housing priority. Due to the number of students participating in OLRS, time slots are spread out and scheduled in small waves during the last two weeks of May.
Confirmed roommates will each receive a timeslot, however, the roommate with the higher time slot will have the opportunity to choose the room for both students first. During the selection process, the first roommate will be able to "pull in" their roommate and confirm their room. Both roommates will be notified once the selection is confirmed.
Step 8: Move-in (MVNU2MSU)
MVNU2MSU will be in early August. The dates will be announced in the Summer leading up to move-in. Students will be checked in and greeted by move-in volunteers, including faculty, staff, and even MSU leadership to assist in their move. It is a fun day to make new friends and get settled into your new home away from home!
Upperclassmen & Transfer Students
Upperclassmen and transfer students are encouraged to live on campus because of the convenience it provides, the freedom to get involved, and the opportunities to meet new people.
Spring Housing
For students starting Mississippi State in the Spring, the Housing Application will open the beginning of October 15th.
Students must be admitted to the university and have a NetID to complete the Spring application and contract. The Main Housing Office will manually assign Spring students based on availability. Students will be notified of their assignment in late Fall.
