Renter's Insurance

Renter's Insurance

Mississippi State University strongly recommends that students/family members invest in renter's insurance coverage. Why? Accidents happen. MSU is not liable for damages or loss to your personal property. This investment can replace damaged or stolen items covered because of the loss can be replaced.

Benefits of renter's insurance coverage:

  • Personal Property Coverage

Personal property coverage protects your belongings from theft, damage, or loss. This can include items such as furniture, electronics, clothing, and other personal items, though you might need an extension to insure precious pieces of property you own.

  • Liability coverage

Liability coverage protects you from accidental injuries and property damage you cause to others, including your residence hall. For example, if your friend trips and falls in your apartment and gets injured, your renter's insurance policy would cover their medical bills and legal fees if they sue you.

Note: if you own a home, please check your homeowner's insurance as there may be renter's insurance for your student provided in their policy. However, additional renter's insurance may cover any gaps between policies at a low monthly rate.
